Antonio Seguì manifeste une volonté d’être témoin de son temps, mais d’une manière différente de ses contemporains. Il va s’y atteler avec frénésie, humour et passion, par le bias d’amples série avec un personeage récurent (el senor Gustavo), témoin, double, ombre portée du peintre. Le parcours d’Antonio Seguì est cohérent et pourtant un constant renouvellement, placé sous le signe de la provocation, de la dénonciation, d’une mise en distance critique du monde. Le travail de Seguì a été très lié à la bande dessinée, une évidence pleinement revendiquée. Une possible approche de l’oeuvre peut également s’effecture en référence aux dessins humoristiques dépourvus de légendes que l’on peut encore retrouver aujourd’hui dans la presse. Antonio Seguì pratique une figuration qui abstractise le réel, jouant avec l’épure en créant ses codes personnels. Une comédie humaine vue par l’oeil du etymologiste/visionnaire, décriant l’absurdité du monde, en la conjuguant au principe d’espérance. Les oeuvres d’Antonio Seguì sont présentes dans de très nombreuses collections publiques à travers le monde. Artiste prolifique, il se rend de façon régulière en Argentine pour des commandes publiques. Véritable star en Amérique du Sud, une rétrospective lui a été consacrée en 2005 au Centre Georges Pompidou.

 

 
Antonio Seguì was born in Argentina in 1934. Arriving in Paris in the early 50’s (via Madrid), he is part of the abundant generation of New Figuration that will flourish in 1960. In 1958, he made a long journey across South America and Central America, before settling in Mexico, where he studied engraving techniques. He also traveled in Africa. In 1961, he  went back to work in Argentina, before leaving permanently in Paris in 1963, where he currently lives and works (Arcueil). Antonio Seguì shows a willingness to be a witness of his time, but otherwise, in a radically different way from his contemporaries. He has frenetically undertaken this with humor and passion in tandem with a reccuring character, el senor Gustavo, witness, double, the painter drop- shadow. The itinerary of Antonio Segui yet in constant renewal, informed by provocation. denunciation shaped in the gap of a critical distance to the world. Antonio Seguì fully acknowledges and validates his work’s kinship with the comic strip. Another formal affinity could be traced to the humorous illustrations without captions nor spreech ballons that are still reproduced in news-papers and magazines. Antonio Seguì is the practitioner of a figuration wich abstracts the real through diagrammatic permutations and the creation of intrisic archetypes and codes. The human comedy as seen by an etymologist / visionary –artist parsing the absurdity of the world in the tense of hope. The works of Antonio Seguì are present in many public collections throughout the world. A prolific artist  he goes regularly to Argentina to work on public orders. Real star in South America, a retrospective was dedicated to him in 2005 in the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris.
