Né le 10 octobre 1942 à Paris, Gérard Titus-Carmel vit et travaille à Oulchy-le-Château dans l’Aisne. Il a fait ses études à l’École Boulle, à Paris, de 1958 à 1962 dans l’atelier de gravure et d’orfèvrerie.
Entre figuration et abstraction, Titus-Carmel travaille essentiellement par séries, explorant,  et analysant des motifs qu’il s’approprie. Il a ainsi réalisé de nombreux ensembles dont Jungles, 2004; L’Herbier du Seul, 2005, ou encore Bibliothèque d’Urcée, 2006-2009, pour les plus récents.
Depuis sa première exposition personnelle, en 1964, Gérard Titus-Carmel a participé à plus de quatre cent cinquante expositions collectives et près de deux cents expositions personnelles lui ont été consacrées. Il a officiellement représenté la France dans de nombreuses manifestations internationales à Paris, Osaka, Alexandrie, New York, Kassel, Sidney, Venise, Moscou, Séville, etc. Son œuvre est représentée dans une centaine de musées et de collections publiques.

 

 

Gérard Titus-Carmel was born in Paris in 1942. He lives and works in Oulchy-le Chateau, France. From 1958 to 1962 he studied at the Ecole Boulle in Paris. He is passionnate by poetry and surealism. Between figuration and abstraction, Titus-Carmel works mainly in series of an object or theme, first he analyzes the process of decomposition or wear a form («Alterations of Sphere», 1971) , this which leads him to design installations where this is an object that is deteriorating.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1964. As a painter and draftsman, he has participated in over 400 group exhibitions and in nearly 150 individual exhibits throughout the world. His work is represented in over a hundred museums and public collections. He has also participated as the official delegate for France in numerous international exhibitions, such as the Bienniale of Paris (Paris, 1969), Expo ’70 (Osaka,1970), the Biennial of Alexandria (Alexandria, 1971), «Amsterdam-Paris-Düsseldorf» (Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1972), Dokumenta VI (Kassel, 1977), «European Dialogue» (the Sidney Biennial, 1979), «Statements/Leading Contemporary Artists from France» (New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, 1982), International Biennale of Art (Venice, 1972 and 1984), «Art in France» : a Century of inventions» (Moskva , Leningrad, 1989), «Contemporary Art in France», French Pavillion, Universal exibition (Sevilla, 1992), etc.  He is also world renowned as an engraver. He has participated in the most famous international exhibitions, such as the print biennials of Ljubjlana, Krakow, Tokyo, Wien, Grenchen, Biella, Bradford, Jyväkylä, Baden-Baden, Taipei and Praha where he won many awards. He has illustrated many books of today’s finest poetry and has also authored over thirty books on art essays and poetry.
